Customer: Market town Waldbröl

Project period: September 2022 – January 2023

The project in brief

The fortnightly cattle and produce market in the market town of Waldbröl (NRW) is a highlight for Waldbröl and the region. The spatial crystallization core of the market, which has been of (supra-)regional importance for decades – with often more than 20,0000 visitors per day! – is the market square in the center of Waldbröl.

In order to strengthen the market, the market square and the entire city center, Waldbröl commissioned us as experts for event strategy as well as for retail, gastronomy and weekly markets:

  • an event concept for the city centre,
  • a market concept for the livestock and produce market and
  • an operating concept for the market and multifunctional hall.

Task and background

The Waldbröl market square is to be developed as a spatial focal point in the region for culture, socio-cultural encounters and market events. To this end, the location – as the only large square in the city center – is to be upgraded and attractively used. Plus: An adjoining multifunctional hall is to be designed as a cultural forum so that regionally effective events can be held both indoors and outdoors. At the same time, the town of Waldbröl developed the Merkurareal in the north of the town center into a new town and event square.

Our task was to develop an overall concept for the markets and events in the city center of Waldbröl – and to consider synergies with existing and planned offers in the surrounding region (e.g. the “Windeck Castle and Museum Park Experience Area”).

Our way of working

The concept was developed along 4 building blocks:

  1. As-is analysis of the use and development potential of the areas and events
  2. Talks with market vendors and “Wir für Waldbröl GmbH”
  3. Appointments and workshops with the project participants and joint definition of further focal points for the development
  4. Elaboration and presentation of the concept to the project participants

We focused on these priorities in the overall concept:

  • Qualifying Waldbröl as a market town – and establishing it as a tourist destination
  • Develop concept proposals for complementary markets and events – for more quality in the city center of Waldbröl and a strong local region
  • Create an operating concept for the markets – especially for the event center (marketplace/multifunctional hall) and the cattle and produce market
  • Develop marketing strategies for the markets and events

The result

Our overall concept not only looks at the locations and events in isolation, but also addresses the potential in terms of variety of offers, quality of stay and synergies with concrete proposals. We always had the common goal in mind: D he city centre of Waldbröl with events and weekly markets.
